Chapter Thirty-Two

I knew I'd regret taking the Glasser case, I just didn't expect it to happen so soon. I mean, the ink wasn't even dry on Nan's check and I already wanted out, but I was stuck, stuck because I didn't want to disappoint anyone, especially myself. The lesson I learned was never criticize anyone's boyfriend even if you think the relationship is yesterday's news. Now that I knew it was Christopher's Harley parked in front of Grace's house, I wondered how in the world he could afford it. There was a reason I called him a moocher--because he was one. That guy was always between jobs or waiting tables, and he got fired a lot. Never his fault, of course. But that's not why I thought he was a moocher. He had a habit of borrowing money (although he called it investing in his latest project), and the charm to convince people to part with it.

Grace had caught me totally off-guard and I was still mad about it. I would never have intentionally insulted her boyfriend; yes, I might've made a snide remark or two, but I wouldn't have called him a loser. Besides, the last time they were dating, it was Grace was the one who said he wasn't Mr. Right, just Mr. Right Now. Working with Grace was supposed to have been the fun part of this case, the one chance we had to work together again, like law school. Now, even if we made up, the resentment would always be there, long after she stopped dating Christopher. I hated Christopher, that stupid yutz, and I was sure he felt the same way about me.

To recap the events of the last twelve hours, Kip was off to the woods with what's-her-name (Charlie!) and Grace had ditched me, or I'd ditched her (what-ev-er) and I was officially co-counsel on a nasty divorce. Now I was driving back to Hollywood cranky and hungry without a single person I could call for lunch. I tried Duke, but his phone went straight to voicemail. At least he would be excited to work on the Glasser case, once he found out.

As I got closer to Hollywood, I thought about taking a walk through T.Y. Park and feeding the ducks, but then I had a better idea. I stopped at Rocco's Pizza, picked up some slices and headed towards Young Circle. When I arrived at my destination, there was only one car in the parking lot, a white VW Jetta Hybrid, just what I would have expected--a car with the VW hippie vibe that was also a hybrid to save the planet. As soon as I opened the door to Precious Paws, I was transported to another world, trading the sound of traffic for a chorus of happy, yipping dogs.

"Oh, good, you're just in time to help," a familiar voice said from somewhere off to my left. "And you brought pizza, I love pizza! Vegetarian, I hope."

I followed the voice and finally located Jessie Sandler.
